Soft brick on a chimney will usually peel apart (spall)

This north Johnson County chimney was built out of soft used brick. The crown on the chimney was poured very thin and had cracked in multiple places. This allowed enough rainwater in to the chimney and the soft brick to began to spall (peel apart). We fist replaced a number of damaged bricks. Next, we demolished and replaced the old crown, then poured a new overhanging crown in its place. The dampers were malfunctioning, which caused a lot of heating and air-conditioning waste. So we replaced the dampers as well. We finished with moisture protection to ensure both the bricks we replaced and the older ones had a fighting chance against Mother Nature.
