Crowns & Chase Covers
The mortar crown, often called a crown cap, is a concrete-like surface at the top of a masonry chimney. Its job is to shed water away from the flue and also keep water from entering the chimney chase. Cracks or missing pieces in the mortar crown can lead to extensive water damage in your chimney. Mortar crowns may be replaced with traditional masonry products or repaired with a specialized sealant called a crown seal.
Prefab chimneys have metal chase covers on top of the chase. The chase cover’s job is to keep rain and animals out of the chimney. The builder of the home often saves a little money making this chase cover out of galvanized sheet metal instead of stainless steel. A properly constructed chase cover has arched supports underneath to help shed water off the chase cover and away from the chimney’s interior.
