Ritchie and Sam, 2 of our CSIA certified technicians, were called out to a customer’s home for a chimney cap install in Olathe, Kansas. The homeowner called after a day of heavy winds. Throughout the day he heard a rattling on his chimney and quickly noticed that his chimney cap was falling off. When our technicians arrived to his home they saw a tree very close to the chimney. This tree had blown in the wind, hitting the chimney cap causing it to fall almost completely off, it was only hanging on by a thread! For chimney caps to stay secure and do their job of keeping animals, water, and debris out, trees need to be a safe distance from the chimney. The distance recommended is at least 10 feet from a chimney, this will prevent tree limbs from hitting the cap as well as ensure that the tree does not catch fire. As a resolution our technicians completed a chimney cap install at the customer’s home in Olathe, Kansas, they also referred a tree trimming company to trim the tree to prevent this from happening in the future.
